Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500 A Relic of War

Acrylic on Arches Paper $1500
There are a series of stories by Keith Laumer about stupendous, self-aware war machines called 'Bolos' that are left scattered throughout the galaxy thousands of years after the war ended. This is my take on his theme. Abandoned Faerie Village Albert Park
Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
There is a Moreton bay fig in Albert Park, which is one of my favourite trees. It cries out to have something secretive amongst its massive roots, that most people walk past without noticing, quietly hidden from the noise and pressure of urban life. I should add that ‘Faeries’ aren’t the kind that grant wishes. They’re the kind that steal your wallet. Chance of Late Showers

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
One of my favourite sheds, near Newstead in Victoria. I sold three shed paintings in rapid succession, so thought I'd be clever and for the first (and only) time paint something I thought would sell. Still waiting. Pier, Akaroa

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
An experiment in style. Not sure it works. Rose Harvest Bird House

Watercolour on Arches Paper
Commission. Brass Bob

Acrylic on Schollers-hammer Paper $1500
An actual brass plumb bob I have in my collection of 'antique' tools. Breaking wave, Akaroa

Watercolour on Arches Paper SOLD
We were supposed to go whale-watching and, looking across the glass-smooth Kaikura harbour, wondered what sort of wusses these New Zealanders might be. A few miles up the coast we realised they might, just, know what they’re doing... A seal came up to look at me while I was looking at the surf. His painting probably came out better. Breaking wave, Sorrento

Acrylic on Arches Paper SOLD
The Mice Will Just Have to Chase Themselvess

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
This was our cat, Elwood - who spent 90% of her life asleep on her back, and the other 10% asleep on somebody’s lap. Graceless, Aimless, Feckless and Pointless

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
AKA 'The Four Chickens of the Apocalypse'. The title is a steal from 'Cold Comfort Farm'. Clear Day, Mount Talbot

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
We just don't get mountains like this in Australia. Most of ours you could walk up. Combine Harvester

Watercolour on Arches Paper Commission
Does Your Mother Know?

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
Best Watercolour, 2013 Kingston Art Show
Highly Commended, 2010 Bayside Art Show
There are MANY urban myths about shoes hanging from power lines. I’m not sure the people who put up the shoes have read any of them...
This got annoying after a while - people would look at it and say slyly 'You know what shoes hanging over a power line means...' If you were going to say it means there’s a drug dealer nearby, I may have to kill you. Victoria Police actually have a page on their website patiently explaining that it’s an urban myth. C’mon - think about it.
One viewer at the art show thought it meant “Does your mother know you’re gay” because of the high heels. Did not see that coming.. Blown Engine

Acrylic on Schollers-Hammer Paper $2500
I did this a while ago to practice painting shiny things. The Fleet Heads East

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500 Forest Child

Acrylic on Arches Paper
A study in eerie characters. Gladys Makes a Break for It

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
Because chickens should always have old-fashioned names. Have you ever met a chicken named Courtney? Goldsworthy Valley

Watercolour on Arches Paper $1500
This is not actually a landscape - it’s entirely fictitious. Andy Goldsworthy is a British artist who works with found natural materials - his most striking works involve balance rocks in impossible way. I thought it would be great to paint a sort of naturally occurring version of this. It looked better in my head, honestly. Hanging On

Watercolour on Arches Paper SOLD
Best Watercolour, 2007 Chelsea Art Show
Some pegs I found on Glady’s clothesline in St Mateo Av, Mildura. I thought they meant something when placed together. I painted this five times - still not entirely happy with the background. I learnt a lot from this painting - aftewards, I realised that what drove me to do it was that there was a story to it, it wasn't just a still life. Ever since then I've looked for subjects with stories. This is harder than it sounds, you can't just buy a tube of 'Story Appeal'. It was fascinating overhearing comments at the Art Show: 'Can’t believe that won - it’s just some old pegs', 'Not bad, but it really needs a bird sitting on the line', 'What it really needs is another peg either side...' The lesson being that all of these are valid, but then it wouldn't be MY painting. In Memory of Liz & Frank

Watercolour on Arches Paper COMMISSION
We quite like wandering around old cemeteries, and the one at Daylesford has some charming headstones in it.

The inscription reads:

Afflictions sore, long time he bore

Physicians were in vain

So God thought best to give him rest,

And ease him of his pain.

Liz went on, happily we suspect, for another 21 years and died aged 95.
